Woman riding bicycle on New York City street

A vigilant driver can cause an accident when they are not paying attention

Bicycle Safety is an issue we should all be concerned about on a daily basis. Many avid trail, mountain and road bicycle riders, myself included, are more cautious behind the wheel when there is bicyclist in the area. However, even the most vigilant driver can cause an accident when they are not paying attention to a bicycle as if it was another motor vehicle on the roadway with the same exact rights as other cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles. I have seen many of my clients, friends and acquaintances fall victim to injuries resulting from collisions with motor vehicles.

Bicyclists must be given the same consideration as other vehicles

No matter how safe we ride a bicycle, we will always be at the mercy of a driver behind a wheel. Besides a helmet, there is not much protection that will keep a rider safe on the roadway. Over the years I have represented dozens of bicyclists who have been injured by driver carelessness. From the unsafe opening of a car door into a bicycle lane in New York City, to the ill-timed right turn from the service road of the Long Island Expressway in Melville, I have seen the actions of careless drivers cause massive injuries to an unprotected bicyclist. Drivers must understand that bicycle safety does not only mean that a bicycle should be operated safely, but that bicyclists must be given the same consideration that another vehicle would be given. When they do not, the results can be devastating. Bicycle safety first – be safe and careful around bicyclists. It will only delay your trip a few moments while it may save a life.
